OZ NEWS: Tim Campbell bored with status as gay icon

TIM Campbell might be blazing a trail for gay men in the TV industry by wearing his heart openly on his sleeve. But the Celebrity Singing Bee host, and beau of Australian Idol runner-up Anthony Callea, says the attention he has received since coming out last year has been "boring".

"It has been a bit like that to be honest," Tim, pictured, told Confidential during his recent visit to Brissie.

"I get that it's interesting but it has so been done to death.

"I do get asked about it a lot, especially when I was doing Wheel Of Fortune press.

"And it's something that I think, you know what, I'm not ashamed to talk about it but by the same token I'm there to talk about my show.

"It's kind of never been a big deal to me, my whole life.

"And it's still not. So I think, if I don't make it a big deal, then it's not."

One of Australian TV's truly nice guys, Tim says he is keen to eventually get back to his serious acting roots for the first time since leaving Home And Away last October.

Reports from down south indicate Tim is eyeing a role on the upcoming Underbelly prequel and the multi-talented thespian admits he wouldn't knock back a role on the gritty series - a huge departure from his current gig on Celebrity Singing Bee.

"(Nine bosses) Michael Healy and David Gyngell have both said that they want me to diversify and I don't know. Underbelly, Sea Patrol ... they are filming The Strip now, so there are plenty of options," he said.

"I'm sure in 2009 there will be more. I'm only a wee 32 so I feel like I have many more years to go. And when I'm Photoshopped, I'm 28."
